Choosing a Domain Name

When choosing a Domain Name, it is important to remember a few main points in order to help visitors.

1. Choose a short name

Make sure that your domain name is short, so users can remember the name of the site. Choosing a name like "Ask.com" is much easier to remember than something like "Whatisityouwanttoknow.com". Domain names can be up to 67 characters long, but a long domain name is not good if you want people to remember it. In addition to having to type it in correctly, it will be hard to fit the name onto the website. So choose wisely when picking a domain name. It may be hard to find a short name, because the short ones have already been bought though.

3. .COM, .NET, .ORG, .MOBI

If your domain name is taken and you cannot find it in .COM, perhaps you can find it in .NET, .ORG, or .MOBI. I generally suggest against doing that because if a customer forgets to type in a name other than .COM the customer instead lands on the competitors site.

However, there are some legitimate uses for names other than .COM, which actually help users remember the name. For example if you are starting an orginization, than .ORG could be appropriate. If you are starting a Network, than sometimes .NET fits. The .MOBI extension is best used when accessed by a cell phone or mobile device.
